What you'll do
- Your guide - A Sofia local whose work is this city's nightlife. He knows which bars fill up on a given night, which ones are worth the walk, and who is on the door.
- The bars on the route - Every stop is a bar Bulgarians drink in themselves, at the prices they pay.
- Who you drink with - Locals fill most of the bars, and travelers from across the globe fill the rest, so the group meets new people instead of only talking to each other.
- Bulgarian drinking customs - The guide explains how a night out runs here as you go, and will ask the group to try rakia at least once.
- Drinking games - The guide starts the games between venues. Lose a round and the next drink is yours.
- The walk between venues - The guide sets the order of the stops and leads the way between them. Nobody has to open a map or take a vote.
- The last stop - The crawl ends somewhere that keeps the rest of the night simple, whether the group carries on or goes back to the hotel.
What you'll need to bring
- Your drinking stamina
- Your original passport or ID, not a photocopy
- Cash for anything you order on top
- A phone charger, because the camera roll fills up
- An open mind about Bulgarian spirits

How a guided bar crawl works in Sofia
Most of the value lands on the first night, before anyone has a feel for the city. The guide already knows which bars are worth the walk and what a drink should cost in each one, so the group pays local prices from the first round instead of learning the city by trial and error.
Sofia's bars do not sit on one street. They are spread across the city, which is why the order of the stops matters as much as the stops themselves. That part belongs to the guide. The group gets the night to spend on each other and on Bulgarian beer.
A door you walk straight through is worth real money on a night out. Twenty minutes in a line is dead time, and the visitor price is what a bar charges when it can tell you are new in town. Sofia bars differ on bachelor parties, and the guide knows which ones are glad to see the group arrive.
Local knowledge is the part groups talk about afterward. You end up drinking things nobody would have picked off a menu, and you leave knowing how Bulgarians run a night out. Pace is the guide's job as well: he pushes on when a bar goes quiet, eases off when the group has settled in, and counts heads before every move.
The drinking games start once the night has warmed up. Losing a round costs you a shot, and a round of beer pong turns up somewhere along the route. What the games are really for is keeping the quieter half of the group involved once the night gets loud.
After the last stop the night is yours. Some groups stay where the crawl finished, some go straight to the hotel. Either way, by then you know the city well enough to get home.

Guided Bar Crawl FAQs
The questions groups ask before they book.
1. How much do you drink on the bar crawl?
That depends on the group's pace and on what you order beyond the package. The included drinks are enough to start the night and not enough to end it.
2. What if someone in the group drinks slowly?
Guides handle mixed speeds every night of the week. The pace is set so the slower drinkers are not left behind and the faster ones are not standing around waiting.
3. Are the venues local bars or tourist bars?
A mix of both. Some are bars where you will be drinking next to Bulgarians, and one or two are used to international groups. The drinks in both hold up.
4. Can the group stay longer at one bar?
Yes. The route bends around the group. If a bar is working, there is no clock pushing anyone out of it.
5. How long does the bar crawl last?
Usually 3 to 4 hours over 5 venues. What happens after that is the group's call: keep going on your own or head back to the hotel.
6. Can someone leave the crawl early?
The group mostly stays together. If someone has to leave early, or joins after the first stop, the guide will send over the address of the next bar.
7. Is rakia required, or can you skip it?
You can skip it. Every stop has international beer and the standard spirits. The guide will ask you to try rakia once, and that is where it ends.
8. Can the group pick the type of bars?
Yes. Tell your planner if the group wants craft beer, cocktail bars or traditional Bulgarian bars, and the route is built to that.
9. How big can the group be?
6 or more, and there is no maximum. A group under 6 pays for 6.
